Centre Wellington Bylaws & FAQs

Answers to common Elora and Fergus questions about fence heights, deck permits, pool enclosures, and heritage-property rules. Municipal requirements can vary by property, so verify current rules with the Township of Centre Wellington before construction.

Under Centre Wellington’s Fence By-law 2018-34 (Table A), fences in the front yard or exterior side yard are limited to 1.2 metres (0.8 metres within a sight triangle). Interior side yard fences can reach 2 metres, or 2.5 metres if at least 50% open above the 2-metre mark. Rear yard fences can reach 2.5 metres, and an unroofed deck in the rear yard allows a privacy screen up to 2 metres above the deck surface. A corner-lot sight triangle runs 9.0 metres along an arterial or collector road, or 7.5 metres along a local street, and a driveway sight triangle is 4m x 6m with an 0.8m solid / 1.2m chain-link height cap. Always confirm your lot’s exact classification with the Township before building.
Yes. Centre Wellington requires a building permit for any deck regardless of its shape, size, or height above grade — a stricter rule than the generic “24 inch” threshold many homeowners assume applies everywhere. We handle the permit application and inspection scheduling as part of your build, so confirm your exact setback and permit requirements with us or the Township’s Building Division before starting.
A pool enclosure must be at least 1.5 metres (about 5 feet) high for a single-family dwelling, gates must be self-closing and self-latching, and a building permit is required before the pool is filled with water. Confirm your specific pool type and enclosure plan with the Township before construction begins.
Fence erection is explicitly exempt from needing a separate Heritage Permit under the Township’s Heritage Permit By-law, even inside a heritage conservation district, so a standard fence project in Elora’s heritage downtown does not trigger that extra review. Elora does sit partly within the Grand River’s regulated floodplain, though: development in the Floodway is generally not permitted, Flood Fringe projects can require Grand River Conservation Authority approval, and a roughly 30-metre setback from the river is a common guideline. If your property is near the river or inside a heritage district, we recommend checking with both the Township and the GRCA before building.
